Finding the perfect tree wasn’t as simple as she thought it would be. They’d walked what seemed like hours by the creek bank, picking tree after tree, Orin getting ready to hack it down before she’d see another she liked better. The moment Orin started to chop it down, another one caught her eye.

“Wait. I want that one instead.” Julia grinned when Orin raised an eyebrow at her. “Are you sure?”

She laughed and nodded her head. “Yes, I’m positive. I truly like that one. I promise this time.”

Orin tossed the hatchet into the air, end over end, before catching the handle and bending over at the tree, chopping it down before she could stop him again. He straightened when it fell, grabbed hold of the base and grinned. “Let’s go before you see another you like better.”

They walked back in silence. Once in the house, he was unusually quiet as he helped her set it up. When it was secure and they were both sure it wouldn’t fall over, he stared at it for long moments before giving her a peculiar look.

“What is it?”

He scratched his chin. “Nothing.”

“That wasn’t a nothing look. You’ve been acting strange since I asked you to help me cut the tree down.”

He blew out a breath. “Does Matt know about this?”

“The tree?”

“Yeah.”

“No, not yet, but he’ll see it once he comes in. Why?”

He gave her a side-eyed look then shook his head. “I’m sure it’ll be fine.”

“Why wouldn’t it be?”

He opened his mouth to say something but closed it and shrugged his shoulders. “Anything else I can do for you?”

Julia shook her head no and thanked him, then followed him outside. The sun was shining, the glare off the snow near blinding and she squinted and stared in the direction of the barn as Matthew and the sheriff rode back over the hill, two ranch hands close behind them.

She lifted a hand to shield her eyes from the sun as they dismounted, Matthew pulling a long-barreled gun from a holster on the horse’s saddle. The sheriff said something, then turned and left as quickly as he’d come. Her shoulders drooped with her disappointment. She’d wanted to speak to him, to ask about Sarah and the others.

Silas grabbed the reins on Matthew’s horse and took him inside the barn, her husband readjusting his hat and following him inside without a single glance her way.

She sighed as she watched him disappear inside the building. Cora’s visit was still fresh on her mind. It had been since the woman left and it didn’t take much to start thinking that her being there was a mistake. The fact she was still as virginal as she’d been when she arrived was telling. She’d been Matthew’s wife long enough for things to have progressed further than they had and now she knew why they hadn’t.

All those looks she thought she’d seen him give her? Nothing but her imagination.

The wind gusted and she shivered and walked back inside. The fire was blazing and she held her hands out to warm them as she stared at the tree.
